rear end selection?

Postby all4gss » Mon Dec 08, 2003 4:51 pm

I've got a 92 sonoma and am looking for some info.

Okay, first i'm sticking with a GM rearend... I don't care if its 7.5 or the larger version. I'm looking to see if there's a reference for the rearend gears. I'm familiar with g-body cars but am not sure if they are the same codes.

Is there a difference between 4X4 and 4X2 rearends? i'm looking for a 3.42-4.10 rearend with stock posi if possible. Are there any other vehicles that share the same rearend (length etc) with the s-series trucks?

TIA,

Keith from Mo.

Code-Description--- Ratio
GU1 AXLE REAR, 2.41 RATIO
GU2 AXLE REAR, 2.73 RATIO
GU4 AXLE REAR, 3.08 RATIO
GU5 AXLE REAR, 3.23 RATIO
GU6 AXLE REAR, 3.42 RATIO
GT4 AXLE REAR, 3.73 RATIO
GT5 AXLE REAR, 4.10 RATIO
G80 AXLE POSITRACTION, LIMITED SLIP

the G80 code will be along with another code

4x4 are 4" total wider than 2wd and ZR2 are 8" total wider than 2wd

those codes will be in the glove box if it says standard ratio (GQ1) it is usually 3.73, thats what it is on all 3 of our 2.5 5 speed trucks,

I belive most rearends after 1988 are 7.625" ring gear with 28 spine axles, over the older 7.5" ring gear with 26 spine axles, however, it has been discovered by some people who checked the code stamped on the axle that some trucks have 7.5" ring gear 26 spline axles in newer than '88 trucks... all 4.3 5 speed trucks have 8.5" ring gears with i believe 28 spline axles, (somone can find more info I'm sure) and some blazers and trucks have rear disk brakes too

very helpful, thanks, i wasn't aware of the 8.5 option. This is prolly a dumb question, but are the 4x4 beds wider than the 4x2 beds? just currious,

Wow, and I thought I would have to go find a new rear end for my project. I'm going to be looking at the donor truck for the first time tomorrow, its a 92 2.5 with a 5 speed. I hope it has 3.73 gears! Do you think the stock rear can handle around 300 ft/lbs at the crank? I only ask because someone told me the stock 4 cyl rear was weak. They said to look for the v6 rear with the square tabs. Thanks!

well only reason it would be weaker in a 92 because it would be the 7.5 26 spline. only way to get the stronger rears after 88 would have been to have a 4.3 truck. After 94.. everything got the bigger rear.

Just remember if you plan on changing tire size (circumferance) it will affect your gear ratio.

The 4th gen F bodies used the 7.5 rear and look what kind of numbers they're making......

pinkfloydms Take your vin to a Chevy dealer and they can get all the rpo option codes on paper.
On the glove compartment sticker if it says G80 its a Gov loc posi ,if it says GQ1 =open rear.
Try to jack up one wheel with trans in neutral ,if it spins and catches Gov lock if no spin Lsd,spins freely =open.
