Fuel Cell Question and rear tire hook

Postby XXXXXXXX » Thu Nov 16, 2017 3:13 am

So after I put in my cal tracs I couldn't get the truck to hook. I went from 3.42 gears to 3.73's this summer and the truck started to hook. We figured the added torque helped to get the caltracs to work properly. Problem solved right?

So its been fine till recently.. now that the air temps have come way down and we are no longer at 100+ degree heat.. the truck has started to have traction issues again. Pretty much back to just blowing the tires off the back of the truck in first. I am figuring a drop in temps has caused the truck to make more power and also the lack of temp has lead to the tires and black top not being as sticky.

Anyway aired the tires down to 18lbs .. no hook.. went from 1/2 turn preload.. to no preload.. to 1/4 gap and no preload.. no hook. (trying to go from a harder hit down to a softer hit to the tires) no hook.

So again there are 9 sec s10's all over the country with stock springs and caltracs that 1.3 - 1.4 60' all day.. but.... not my luck.. any way here is the point..
I am going to try putting the battery in the rear corner of the bed and put in a fuel cell.

I bought the fuel cell tonight.. I got this one. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/jzp- ... /overview/

Does anyone have any photos of a how they mounted there fuel cells? I would really love to see what others have done.
Has anyone added a fuel cell to the back of the bed? If so what was the result?
Has anyone with caltracs added a fuel cell?
Any Ideas or suggestions welcome.

Thanks X

Are you still attempting to hook on the street? You're killing me.

Yes move everything to the rear, that will help big time. You can use the Jaz fuel cell straps and just bolt it down to the bed.

Ya.. still trying to hook on the street... lol... the mustang kid with my same tires and a 9 sec car he hooks with them.

I the funny thing is those straps don't go all the way to the bottom of the cell.. they are like an 1nch above the bottom.. I googled photos of fuel cell mounts and many people put a spacer in there.. but I would think they would go to the bottom of the cell.. its almost like they think you are going to cut a big hole in your floor and drop it down an inch or two. Mine I will have to cut a hole in floor for the fuel fittings unless I raise the whole assembly.. Kinda why I wanted to see photos of how folks put there cells in so I can start formulating ideas on how to put it in.

I cut a hole in my bed and made my own straps.

No 2 cars or trucks are alike. What someone else does will NOT have the same result with your ride. So ignore mr mustang kid and make your own adjustments.

At this point its best to keep doing trial and error. Its the street.....the worst place to try to get traction unless you lay a lot of rubber.

Mustang kid was just an example.. most folks have et sreets but.. plenty of 555dr people that hook around here... seems to be just a "me" thing.. lol
That's why I wanted to get some more weight back there.. and then do some more suspension tuning..

You got any photos of how you did your cell? I would love to see.

Just cut a square "U" shape and push it down to the same angle as the sump, for it to hang down below the bed floor, and make your own straps from 1" x 1/8" flat steel or aluminum,
