95 4.3L 4x4 auto to carb V8

Postby Bumpstick00 » Sat Aug 26, 2017 9:28 am

I just acquired a 1995 S-10 extended cab, push button 4wd, with an automatic transmission. It has sat in a garage for almost 2 years. It was parked due to the owner not knowing about cars and had a coolant leak and started running hot. They were told by a neighbor that it had a blown head gasket. So I was asked to replace the head gasket. After I got the intake off it looked that the water pump had gone out and was leaking out of the wheep hole. I saw no signs of oil and coolant mixing. But not sure if the head was warped to over heating.

They wanted the truck gone so now it's mine. I don't have it back together yet (didn't pull the heads, replaced the water pump and started putting it back together). I'm hoping that it will run as is but my plan is to do a V8 swap anyway.

Does the automatic that's behind the '95 4.3L have a TCM ? Does the transmission need the ECM to work?

The 4.3L is TBI but I plan to replace it with a carb'ed V8 for simplicity. I don't have to work about SMOG or vehicle inspections where I live. I'm want to delete the electronics with the exemption of electric fans and fuel pump (but I can wire those as stand alone)

Is the 4wd going to work if I eliminate the EFI? With the stock t-case and front IFS hold up to a stock-ish sbc (260-300hp & 280-300tq)?

The eventual plan is to work up to a SAS with something like a th350 and np205 combo. And then it will be a mud toy.

Will be an easier swap to throw in a v8 TBI and tie in to existing sensors etc and use the stock tranny.

But if its an all out off road truck then strip it and go with a th350 now, a 4l60e will need a stand alone controller.

So the 95's have the electronically controlled 4L60... I had one on my 94 Z28. It was a PITA to deal with when I changed tire sizes and axle gears.

What would I need from the donor truck when swapping in a TBI 350 into my 95 S-10?.... Long block with intake manifold, would I need the 350a TB? Could I just upgrade the injectors in the 4.3's TB?

Most use the 350 TBI and then install the 454 injectors when going with more power. A 95 350 tbi will mostly plug right in and extend a few wires and then change a module in the PCM. Theres a write up on here somewhere
