Swap question

Postby XXXXXXXX » Tue Jul 04, 2017 4:17 pm

There is a guy with a 97 s10 with a swapped 97 v8 Silverado tbi set up in it. We have emissions here.. I know in my 97 rav 4 they just hook into a plug under the dash.

Can anyone tell me how emissions works on a swapped s10 like the one above? I am thinking about buying it.

Also I know it has a few codes... can the putor be hacked to get rid of the codes or make it pass emissions? I don't know if emissions reads the 02 output of the sensors
or if its just that it doesn't have codes so they know its good.

Any info would be helpful.

Thanks X

Check your local swap laws. Some say engine must be same year or newer, or it has to meet vehicle emissions that the motor currently is in

Ask the local inspector

I do not know the laws in your area, but when we did have emission testing they just plugged into the OBD port and if things looked good you passed. All they looked for here is that the PCM is reporting that all monitors have passed, like the heated catalyst, EVAP, etc. Usually about 5. Also that no codes are present.

Engine swaps here when we had emission testing was a check for a cat on 1996 and newer and a tailpipe test. Not very tough at all. Now we have no emission testing at all so anything goes!

Your state motor vehicle "whatever" should have info online. You can also talk to the guys who do the inspections and testing.
