New project has me torn

Postby BRPerformance » Sun Mar 12, 2017 9:47 pm

I bought a 84 2wd s10 blazer a few weeks back with the intentions to put a v8 in it. I have a 350 4 bolt main engine right now that I picked up for $100. I have always been into Fords and Hondas, so I'm not overly familiar with Chevy stuff.

What has me thinking is, do I build the 350, or do I do a ls based swap. I have been checking around for prices on a 5.3l and 4l60e. They are between $1500-2000 for the pair depending on miles. Seems like I'll be into the entire swap upwards of $4000 just to have a higher mileage engine with under 300hp.

Just looking for some input since most the people I know aren't into this kind of stuff.

It really depends on your budget.. the new LS stuff is awesome.. we have guys here locally and on the forum running 9's even 8's with them without a ton done to them.
But they are expensive.. so a buddy of mine just bought that fancy intake for his LS.. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/msd- ... fgodWN0Hog
Pretty much everything is expensive for them compared to the older sbc stuff.. So compare the costs for each.. so another friend of mine has a chevelle.. he bought a 6.0 and trans.. paid 4500.00 he is going to drop another 3k for the turbo kit and probably that manifold above. etc etc.. you can do a lot for 9k with older sbc .. so its just up to you for what you want to do.

X

Edit.. so another way to look at is.. I paid 500.00 for my 350 short block.. I paid 200.00 for forged pistons.. I just bought a set of trick flow heads for 600.00 etc etc.. cam and lifter is going to be 116.00.. new springs for the heads 67.00.. my blower i paid 800.00... my carb I paid 150.00.. etc etc
82 S10 Longbed.. stock 305.. b&m 144 blower.. 7lbs.. stock 801 heads.. dyno'd 194rwhp...holley 750dp.. percys adjust a jet in the front & rear.. headman 1 1/2 shorty headers.. 2 1/4 dual exhaust with hooker aero chambers.. msd with boost timing master.. 2500 stall .. 700r4 .. 3.73 posi fact s10 disc brake rear end.. caltracs.. 275/60/15 Nitto Extreme 555 drag radials

You need to shop around more, Picked up a 6.0 brand new for 1800 off craigslist. Aberage around here for a JY engine is in the 250-400 range depending on year and milege.
As far as going 9's on a engine with little mods good luck. takes over 700 hp to do that, turbo yes.

Yes we shop around here.. but LS swaps are very popular here.. even in fox body and newer mustangs..

The above post wasn't clear.. wasn't saying an LS is going to run 9's & 8's with no mods.. the post assumed a turbo as that's what every body does with them here. So for example a local kid here put a 5.3 in his mid 80's Malibu.. did nothing to the long block.. threw a t88 on it and went mid 9's

Do the SBC and do it on a budget. Get a feel for the truck and upgrade suspension, interior etc then do an LS swap if you want.

A bare bones 350 in an S10 is enough to be competitive with some of the little ricers around.

Kaizenspeed is a local, but world know shop. There really isn't "ricers" around here, unless they are still in highschool. A lot of guys Hondas around here are 500+whp. I have a k24 swapped 91 civic with a 62mm precision on it. I've never put it on the rollers, only street tuned. Should be around 400-420whp.

I always wanted a s10 blazer with a v8. My dad had one when I was a kid and I've always wanted to do one of my own. I did some more looking today, no one in this area is even selling and variant of the LS on craigslist. There is some in junks yards. Roughly $800 for a 5.3l 160k+ miles.

Even with my fairly quick Honda, nothing beats that sound and feel of a v8 around the same power. My blazer still runs and drives with its v6, so it's not like the thing is just taking up space. I could just start gathering parts for it.

Got videos of your civic?

Yes certainly gather parts first. Makes the swap much faster.

If you can do those then a V8 swap in an S10 is nothing. Once you get the swap going and then dome you will wonder why you didn't do it sooner.

I'm not worried about the work involved, I just wanted some input on which route I should go. Some people to bullshit with about it.
