LT1 swap into a 98 s10 pickup

Postby Blue 305 » Tue Sep 06, 2011 4:34 pm

OK here it goes.Theres a guy I work with that has a 90's station wagon with an LT1 in it.He wants to put it in his 98 s10 pickup.I see there are no stickies on this swap.Just bits and peices here and there. He has the whole car,so if anyone can help on this.I would appreciate it.I would like to know what egine mounts will work? What headers? If there are any wiring diagrams that anyone has done?

Hey Jeff, on the general the 2.8 mounts and the regular swap brackets work. The know sensor gets in the way a little. The quick fix is a street elbow to mount the knock. The headers, none are the best. All have some issues with plug wire clearance. The headman longtubes will fit, but require the v8 mounts that Rick likes. Best to relocate the oil filter with the longtubes. I will be using the newer Sandersons that have the #1 and #2 run above the 3 & 5, and 4 & 6. Yes, these are shorties. The only other route is the stealth headers that look like a log. Those fit, but suck on looks.

Being the truck is a 98, you should keep the original ecm to run the cluster. Have the LT1 ecm do the engine and trans duty and run the info to the stock ecm as piggy back.

Thanks you guys for your input. So to cap it all off.Pull the engine from the doner car get all the harness and ecm.Use Ricks best motor mounts.Use a 90 elbow on the knock sensor.Headman long tubes. The 4.3 radaitor.A piggy back harness to talk between the truck ecm and the LT1 ecm.How about drive shafts? Will the stocker fit or will it have to be shorted/lenghted? Oh also to relocate the oil filter. Is that about all? How about tuning? I would asume that it would all stay the same if nothing was done to mod. any of the engine.

VATS will still be active and the engine will run maybe 3 seconds before the ECM shuts it down. As for the oil filter, you can use a short one, but have to drop the header every time you change it. Thus, better to relocate it. The driveshaft will work if the motor allows the tranny to sit in the stock mount. If you have to move the tranny back, then you may need to cut it down.

The ECM needs to be re-flashed. The security feature is called VATS. It needs to be turned off. You can get any tuner to do this. While your in there, you can change the settings for the speedo and maybe a couple other tweaks.

He should be able. He uses HP Tuners, if I remember correctly. He still has to pay for credits to do the tune, to gain access to the ECM. A programmer can do this for under $100.

You can also build a signal generator box to make the square wave signal that the pcm needs, all for about 20 bucks of radio shack parts. That's what I have in my truck. It was stupid simple to make. If you can't find a schematic online, pm me and Ill see if I can dig mine up from my files.

Lol, sorry Jeff I replied to your PM this morning. I am rarely online during the weekends anymore, just too busy.

I am unsure if I can remove VATS from an LT1 PCM, don't they have a OBD-II port but are still OBD-I modules?

The 97 model was an OBD2 with the crank sensor. I know it is a different system from the what you normally deal with. Yes, they older ones were the OBD-I with the OBD-II ports.
