Need advice on a 1st gen swap

Postby Gupp » Fri Sep 22, 2017 10:37 am

Currently looking at buying an 83 s10 5sp 4x4
It's a 2.8 v6 that is blown, and I'm interested in swapping in a carbed 350. Goal is around 300-350 hp
I have access to 350 blocks and will be building it myself(also budget orientated). The first bit of advice is how do I attain that power level(will be daily driven). From there I need advice on the best block to swap in etc, is like to keep it a manual truck and keep the 4wd of course. I've done a little searching but everyone seems to go with autos. Feel free to chime in about needing to swap the rear ends, etc( I also plan on 32-33inch tires, limited diff, and selectable front lockers). I know I'll probably need to for the torque difference. Any advice is welcome. I have access to welders/cutting torches, etc. all the work will be done by my father and me. Let the ideas roll!

Welcome! For a budget build you can go with some good vortec heads and a good torquey cam. As far as blocks you can go with a roller block but it depends on how tight your budget is.

Don't use headers, use manifolds and a remote oil filter and you should be able to do a 5 speed just fine. Rick will have more of the specifics

Still figuring out how to navigate this*facepalm* uh I'll have around 4-5k to play with. I can build the motor later if I need to after I have everything in place

No worries, took care of the other topic for ya.

I recommend buying everything first and then starting the swap. Is it strictly an off road truck or will it be on the road more?

Thanks! It's going to be a daily driven truck when done. It will see some off roading, but nothing extreme.

I have a buddy who has a vortec engine from a 97 chevy pick up. Could I convert that to carb? I get the whole fuel injection thing, but I'm trying to keep as many computers out of it as I can. Also could I use a 5 speed transmission from a 1500, and fab to fit or is it too long?

Yes you can convert it to carb. I'm not too sure on the trans. I am sure it will bolt up too. You can either make your own crossmember or get one from a 4.3 truck.

Talked to the guy. It's a 98 vortec engine that's already been converted to carb. It only has a 470 avenger carb I think. Says it burns a little oil though? I don't have much experience with 350s; what would make that motor a reliable 350ish hp with a nice torque curve

Performer RPM (and/or) Air Gap, 600~650 carb, and a nice little camshaft. 8)

Little? Darn. Lopey is fun! Haha I know it leads to bad street manners. Any thoughts on the oil burning? He says it doesn't seem like it's much but he only trailrides the vehicle and drives it to town every once in awhile

Also, he used the "summit racing brand" intake manifold conversion. Thoughts on this?

Nothing wrong with Summit Brand. Run it for now.

If its burning oil then its either valve stem seals or time to tear it apart and take a look at the cylinders.

More than likely it's valve stem seals. Every Vortec block I've seen had perfect cylinder walls, thanks to better machine work and very accurate fuel injection. Anything over .500" lift is pretty much wasted with Vortec heads, so try to build power where you can use it, say 2500 to 4500~5000. It will be WAY more fun. 8)

The vortec heads I know of have a saWtooth pattern on the end. You'll need a special ial intake for the. Vortec. Heads. I was building a spare parts engine so I had my 305 434 heads rebuilt to raise compression. I reused the 12cc dished Pistons but honed it and turned the crank for a driveway special lol. the best way but my intent was to spend as little as possible. I installed a summit 448 lift cam and I've done this combo before and I loved it! I have 373 factory rear so it should be fun.
very little compares to firing up a small block or big block Chevy motor for the first time.

Been a few years since I've been around. At that time I had an '87 4x4. You will have to swap out the tranny for a later one from a 4.3 to match the bolt pattern of the 350. As for the rear, at that time guys were swapping in Ford Explorer rears for a stronger rear & disc brakes.
When you turn your V8 S10 on, does it return the favour?

I will give up my guns when they pry my cold dead fingers from around them.
