1992 4.3 5 speed v8 swap questions.

Postby K-rowden » Sun Jul 16, 2017 8:22 am

New to the page so no hating on my ignorance. I have not been able to find the exact info that i am looking for on my 4.3 to 5.0 v8 swap. My S10 has the 4.3 nv3500. The truck runs great and the A/C even works! I just want to put a 305 in it and didnt know what all i had to buy for it to make it work...specifically the serpentine andA/C brackets and all the front engine brackets.I don't think the motor mounts will need any changing but again I'm not 100% sure. I'm just going to make a driver, not a hot rod. I will even use the stock tbi for a while IF it will work on the 305 !?!?! I have not bought a 305 yet but a tbi 305 is pretty easy to come by...If someone has done a similar swap please enlighten me with any and all info posible. Thanks in advance

Welcome!
All your accessories will bolt right on to a 305 or a 350. Your best bet is to read some of these. viewtopic.php?f=8&t=15501

There should be plenty of information there for any questions that you have. :)

Your motor mounts will have to go. Check " the best motor mount" thread...in fact read all of the sticky sin each area...it's a wealth of info. Some photos are probably missing due to photobucket holding our pics hostage...we don't negotiate with terrorists...lol

Could someone send me a link to buy some good mounts that will work for my swap? From what ive read the 4.3 mounts will bolt up to my v8 but they are very flimsy? Is that correct?

If it's a 92 TBI you are using then it will be a very simple swap. Use the camaro manifolds for exhaust, move the radiator forward and use the 4.3 accessories, use the nv3500 from the 4.3, and everything will work out like it was meant to be from the factory.

Theres a sticky on the correct manifolds to use. I've been wanting to do what you're doing but with an LS swap. All original and functional but with a V8 as a good cruiser.

The best motor mount adaptor thread is one you want to read.

Also 1 have 700 replys now but ... if you do a search you can probably find info on my feelings with a 305. My opinion is if you can do the 350 then do that. The 305 has been pretty much a disappointment.. A 350 will get you a lot more power.. better gas mileage .. and its the same work for better results.. check out my sig for what my dyno results were with a blower. I am building a 350.

My 2 cents.

305's are just cheap and again I'm not building a hot rod. I didnt know anythi g about a 305 getting worse gas mileage. Ive had a few 305 camaros and they done pretty good. If i find a tbi 350 for a good price ill buy it but a 305 wont hurt my feelings. Ive had nothing but good luck with them. I think i found the mount adapters I'm going to be using.

The V8 style mount adapters are available as Trans-Dapt P/N 4689, or you can make them yourself out of 1/2" plate steel. If you have the resources to cut, drill, and tap them, I can supply you with a template,

I found some adapter plates from trans-dapt but they were a diffrent part number and saod it was for a 4x4 so i emailed them and asked if they would work on a 2wheel drive and they said yes so i guess i will order them. $74 though

Rickracer: the part number u gave me didnt specify if they would work on the 4.3 to v8 or if they were for a 2.8 to v8.

You may want to talk to rick or one of the other guys before you buy them.. these guys have "been there done that" about a million times on this page. The thread is called the "best motor mount adaptors" because they are. In the last 2 1/2 years I have seen endless posts from guys that bought something other than what they recommend and then have nothing but problems even though trans dapt said they would work. There was a guy here just a few months ago that called them and they said to use a different numbered adaptor and he had nothing but problems.

My 2 cents.

Just to ad one other thing.. I didn't put my motor in my truck.. I bought it with it installed.. I don't have the trans-dapt.. I have what I think are the hooker adaptors.. anyway.. just to give you an idea.. I cant get my starter out with out lifting the engine.. I cant run an HEI distributor cause I am too close to the fire wall so I have to run a smaller msd.. on it I cant get the cap off without first pulling everything off the firewall and then cant get at my back sparkplug wires.. I have to put them on the cap first and then put my cap on the dist then put the front 4 wires on... because my engine sits further back and higher than with the trans-dapt mounts my headers sit right against the floor so when its hot the bottom of my shoes burn my feet when driving.. ( I know a guys whos s10 carpet caught on fire cause he doesn't have the trans-dapt either and his headers sit against the floor like mine) I cant take my headers out with out lifting the engine.. I cant lift the engine much cause it sits too far back hits the firewall so I can only lift it just a bit... I cant run an a/m valve cover cause a slightly taller one hits my heater case... I cant get at my back header bolts cause the engine sits too far back.. the list of items goes on and on and on.. so when I put my 350 in.. I am putting in the trans-dapt mounts they recommend here.

Good to know. Trans-dapt just has crappy descriptions for their adapters because they don't have a single one that mentions anything about a 4.3 2 wheel drive swap unless it says for use with a turbo 350. I guess that means it wont work with my nv3500? I'm not sure. I'm gonna email them again and make sure they will pay for returned shipping if they don't work because they said the 4x4 adapters will work.
