4.8L / 4L60E - transmission clearance issues

Postby projected » Tue Nov 21, 2017 4:31 pm

Currently trying to drop a 4.8 / 4L60E combo into a 98 Sonoma - I notched the frame and I'm using a "weld it yourself" set of eBay mounts that look identical to those sold by trans-dapt.

I can not get the engine back far enough against the firewall to clear the notch as the transmission is hitting the transmission tunnel. I pulled he intake to get more clearance but it's still not enough. Do I need to jack the truck higher and install the engine at an extreme angle and pivot it back into place? Is it common to have to modify the tunnel on these swaps? I can cut the notch deeper but it looks nearly identical to the picture shown below.

To further complicate things, I unexpectedly acquired a much nicer '03 S10 in an identical configuration - this power train is going to be moved to it as soon as I figure out the issue with the Sonoma (Sonoma is getting junked, frame is rough).

We typically fold back the lip between the firewall and the floor, it helps even on stock V6 trucks. 8)

What oil pan are u using? That notch looks big enough for most pans you should have no clearance issues. Other than what rick suggested, lift the cab up off the frame and slide the engine and trans in.

Projected; Are you trying to drop the motor and trans in at the same time? If so, I can tell ya now it will not work that way in any S10 that I know of without severe cutting/beating. Trans or motor must be installed before the other then attached from underneath. Your 4L60E should bolt in easily as this is the native trans for this truck. I would get it in first, then drive shaft to make sure it's all in right place, then motor.
Hope this helps
