Electric water pump

Postby lowblazin94 » Sat Jan 06, 2018 12:13 pm

I will be keeping this updated for those of you wondering if you should run a water pump and what to expect.

This is for my street/strip truck with the 385 and aluminim heads running 16AN lines for the cooling system.

In the dead heat of Houston summers at 100 degrees in stop and go traffic my 180 thermostat keeps the motor at 180 and slightly below. While driving it would creep over 180 but not by much.

Now with the cooler temps my thermostat would open and temps would jump to 200 and then come back down and do that cycle when sitting in traffic. The cool water would hit the thermostat and close it then it would jump over 200 again.

I just removed the thermostat as recommended by the guys at Meziere. So I will be making a cruise later to see how the temps do. The techs recommended to never run a thermostat and at the very most run a restrictor.

With air temps at 60 the truck wouldnt go above 120. Good problem to have but as temps rise i'll see how it does. Might need to add a restrictor at some point

I would disagree with the 'techs' and say running a thermostat is a GOOD idea, for the same reasons EVERY production car with an internal combustion engine has one. But I do drill one or two 1/8" to 3/16" holes in the outer diameter to allow some flow before the stat opens, also preventing air locks. 8)

Correct but dead heading an electric water pump will wear it out quickly. I can control the water pump and fans so after it gets some heat in it I can turn the fans on.

I thought most aluminum heads need at least a 180 to make the most efficient use of the combustion chamber.. as in many run 220 deg for a normal op temp.

Maybe for a DD but with this set up i'm going for pure power. Not too worried about fuel economy
