Hedman 69490???

Postby mixman98 » Mon Aug 07, 2017 9:51 am

I know this subject has been knocked around to death, as I have read hundreds of posts about headers on this site. This is why I'm confused about which ones to buy. The truck is an 89 2wd that had the 4.3 originally. I will be using the motor plates made from Rickracers templates and the stock truck style clamshells. The motors is a carburated 010 block with aluminum heads AFR straight plug heads that is just under 400 hp and is bolted up to a 700R4/4L60 trans. Are there any mods that need to be done to the truck/motor/trans for the Hedman 69490's to be used, other than remote oil filter? I've read that the plug wires on the drivers side are right on the tubes and clearance issues with the steering shaft, frame issues, and that the motor has to be removed to get the headers out. I'd appreciate any help with this. Thanks, Larry

If you route the plug wires correctly, they will be fine. I'm coming up on like the 6th or 7th year running mine just the way I did them originally, although I've added a MSD 6530 Digital 6AL2 in place of the original 6AL. And none of the rest of that crap is true. As long as you're running as mini starter, and not an old school, low torque, full size, you'll be fine.

I have the column shifter right now. Do I need to switch to the floor shifter to use the 69490's? Rick, the 4.3 starter will not work with these? It's not true that these headers hit the control arms? Thanks guys.

It depends which 4.3 starter... I like the "Vortec" starters, but the one I use the most is an aftermarket gear reduction mini starter. I believe you could make a column shifter work, but I always run a B&M Pro Ratchet. 8)

Column shift will be a challenge. If you're going to race then do the B&M Pro Ratchet that I also have and absolutely love it. But I have a full manual valve body so I didnt have a choice, but still worth it no matter what you run.
