What kind of headers?

Postby BIG COUNTRY » Wed Feb 08, 2017 12:53 pm

I have a 1989 chevy s10 with a 355 sbc with a comp 268 cam TH350. Looking to upgrade to a 383. But my question is this what headers are the best for performance short tube headers or long tube headers. I have long tube headers on their now(Hedman I think) believe and the problem I'm having is when I route the shifter cable the collector is in the way. What kind of headers do I need to use to prevent this?

You need to move the shifter cable and insulate it. 8)

The shifter cable isn't in The bracket that bolts to the bottom side of the tranny. Looks like ima have to modify The bracket to get the cable to come on the bottom side of the tranny. That's the only way I can see it working.

To answer the question... long tube makes more HP and Torque.. Shorties are usually not as good as a decent set of ram horn manifolds (2.5" ex port) ..
My shorty headers constantly seem to burn up my speedo cable.. even after I moved it and tied it with camp.

That shifter MAY get you hurt, I would get something else, it's a bargain basement shifter that may not function correctly under certain circumstances, but most B&M shifters will have the same kind of cable brackets, so you'll have the same challenge no matter which one you choose to use. Myself, I use the B&M Pro Ratchet in my race car AND my DD/Tow vehicle V8 S10,

Oh ya.. I missed that.. not to knock your shifter but the zgate is not very good.. you can get a used b&m mega shifter around here for 100 usually on craigslist..

Yes, just keep in mind that the reverse lockout doesn't always work.......I found out the hard way, going into reverse at over 100 mph....now THAT....was a HAIRY RIDE for a few seconds!!!!

BTW, there MAY be a pic or two in the build thread for my truck that shows my shifter cable bracket... 8)

Looks like quite the fun right there. I'd give B&M a call. They've been very helpful everytime i've called them. Might be able to fab a bracket so it moves it up.

You can also cut that circle part of the bracket on top of the pic

I can crawl under mine tonight and see if there's room to simply bend it.

Do you have the spacers for the bracket and bolt it down tight yet? I'd do that and then try slightly bending it up

I made my headers so I won't be too much help on clearance pics. But it should be able to hand some bending to move it up out of the way
