no spark----Help!?

Postby mb9ballr » Sat Aug 26, 2017 2:02 pm

Someone help please...... I pulled a carburated 350 from an 84 K10 and stuck in into my 1991 S10, in place of the stock 2.8. Long story short.....i tried to fire it for first time today. Spins over good, has compression, getting fuel into carb, has fire on "batt" wire at distributor but no spark to plugs? while swapping i did not touch distirbutor other than replacing cap. Didnt buy new coil (probably shouldve), and didnt replace ICM under rotor. any ideas why i'm not gettin spark?

For standard HEI you should just run 12v and ground the coil and get spark. Coil be bad the if you are still getting no spark.

OK, I have no clue where/what the wires coming from the bottom of the distributor (attached inside to the ICM) do? There are 3 on the V8 and the V6 has 4 wire plug. Can anyone point me to a diagram the will help me rewire them if they're needed?

Ill double check the order but the 3 plugs are 12v, tach, and ground.

You might need to cut the 4 wire and move those to a 3 wire for the HEI

Ok, I'm not referring to the wires attached to the distributor cap but the wires coming through the base of the distributor, directly from the ICM. Would that cause a no spark issue? and one is "hot" with the key in "on" position

Those 3 wires from the bottom need to be hooked up to the cap. Look at this pic.

If you don't have the wires from the base of the HEI distributor plugged into the terminals on the cap, you're not getting power to the distributor, regardless of whether you hooked up a wire to the BAT terminal. Look under the coil cover, you'll see what I mean.

So, the ICM should basically only fit one way into the distributor. You'll have two wires from the pickup ring, white and green. They will go onto the module on the terminals labeled W / G. The other end of the module has the wires that go outside of the distributor body. They are label + / C + should get 12v from your BAT wire, and the C is basically the negative side of the coil. The module should be screwed down to the distributor body, using some heatsink compound on the flat aluminum. Note: Dielectric grease is NOT heatsink compound.

Here's the inside of one I have in the garage. You can see the W / G markings on the left side of the module. Yours should look similar inside. If it doesn't, post a picture of what you have. If you can't post, send me a PM and I'll give you my email address.

Mine is exactly like yours with vacuum advance. Everything is hooked up like you describe. I just am not getting spark from top of distributor cap and down the plug wires.
Could it be a bad ground or no ground somewhere since I just swapped the V8 in? I'm trying to run it without the ECM.
