Key Off Battery Light On

Postby mixman98 » Tue Nov 07, 2017 6:50 am

Just started hooking up wires on my build. Truck is an '89, originally had the 4.3 automatic. The only wires currently hooked up are the ground (battery to the block), positive (battery to starter), red wire from battery cable to alternator, and two red wires with fusible links that connect to an eyelet to the alternator as well as the plug that connects to the alternator. I have cranking power to the starter (purple wire) with the key in the on position, so no issue with cranking power. When I turn the key to the off position, the red battery light on the dash stays on. Any ideas? I'm sure those few wires are hooked up are right. Also, should the factory fuel pump be running with the key on or only when cranking? I can jump the pump by running a wire from the orange to the gray in the relays and it will run. ECM is not being used.
Thanks,
Larry

Pump needs to run with key on.

What alternator do you have? A part # will help. The battery light is more of a dummy light. If the voltage at the back of the alternator is good then its just a little wiring issue somewhere.

The alternator is the factory alternator. It worked fine when the 4.3 was in the truck. Wires for the alternator have not been cut in any way.

You got something backfeeding the alternator....the fuel pump needs to have the relay jumpered to turn on via switched ignition.

The only thing going to the alternator is the hot from the battery and the (factory) dual red
wires that go into an eyelet. Which is how it was hooked up on the 4.3.

What year is this? Pics? IIRC, the alternator should be a red and a white wire....one hot all the time, one switched ignition.... :?

Do u have each 10.guage red wire from the battery junction block run to the c100 bulkhead on the right pin? Off the top of my head I forget the exact pinout but I have the manual at home. Also you should have the brown wire from the L Term on the alt to pin A1 on c100. Then the ignition (pink) wire on the same alt plug (f or I term) run to a switched ignition source.

I still haven't figured this out guys. The only wires hooked up are: Positive on battery down to starter post, 10 ga red from battery to post on starter, dual 10ga red wires that go into an eyelet to post on alternator which feeds fuse block, plug to alternator (brown and pink/black wires) to side of alternator, and 10 ga purple wire to solenoid on starter. Engine cranks, no issues there. I cannot find the pink coil wire that is only hot in crank and on position. The only 10ga pink wire I see is a constant hot wire (pic). The other two red wires in the pics are also constant hot wires. The red wire with the end connector is the one I thought was the coil wire, but is a constant hot wire. Also, the battery light on the dash is still on constantly and while the plug into the alternator is in, there is a low toned constant beeping noise. If I unplug that, the beeping and battery light go off. The truck will start and run, I just have to pull the coil wire to shut it off.

You have a short to power somewhere, and the alternator plug seems like the most likely place to start, since it's acting abnormally also. If you unplug the alternator plug first, will the engine shut off with the key? :?:

Rick, with the alternator plug not connected, and the key off, there is still power to the coil wire, so the truck will not shut off. Before I cut any of the factory wiring, I checked all of the wires and separated any that were hot with the key on/off. I knew which wires were for the lights, wiper motor, horn, alternator, so I didn't touch those at all. I unhooked the ECM. Most of the wires coming out of the firewall (behind passenger head) were cut. I just wanted to explain exactly what I've done.

Sounds like the wire you picked for your coil wire is probably the wrong one??

I only seen one heavy pink wire in the protective tubing as shown in the pic. I'll check again. Thanks
