V8 S10 Blazer new to the site.

Postby V8BeatDown » Tue Mar 15, 2011 10:24 am

Whats up guys, I'm new to the site. This is my second attempt on a v8 in my 88 s10 blazer. The first 350 lasted about 1k miles before coming apart on me. Just built a 305 (got it real cheap) mostly stock rebuild but 282 duration cam. Also a th350 going back into it. Ive got most of the work done getting it back going just a little more finishing touches and it will be road worthy. Fired it up last night for the first time, cranked right up and sounded great. Heres a picture from the other night, don't have an up to date one at this time

This is the 350 that was in there last year

Thanks for all the comments, got it nearly ready to drive last night but ran into a few problems. The mechanical fuel pump isnt pumping any fuel to the carb. Tried 2 different pumps I had laying around, I took the line off the inlet side of the pump and sucked gas from the tank, so the problem isnt in the tank. Also the other problem is my stock drive shaft is a couple inches too short to work. Anyone with some info would be greatly appriciated.

You needed the mid length TH350, not the short shaft. Best bet is measure what you need (center of the u-joint to center of the u-joint), and go hit the J/Y. If you can't find one the right length, get one longer and have it shortened, that's a lot cheaper than building one from scratch, 8)

I got the 305 and th350 out of a 78 caprice I bought running and driving for $450 bucks, so this is what I had to work with lol. I'm planning a trip to pull a part this weekend after I find the length I need. I ordered an electric fuel pump and the block off for the mechanical pump. So hopes are getting it driving next week as long as I don't have to shorten a drive shaft. Thanks for the help.

Well I got nearly everything ready exept the drive shaft problem. But there is another problem. When I go to fire it up I have to have the throttle nearly all the way open for it to crank, and when it finally does crank it only goes about 1000 rpm at almost full throttle. When I let off the throttle it just dies. Anyone have any ideas what this might be. Thanks

fuel pressure perhaps, timing, are you sure that the pedal is opening the carb all the way? Have you done any carb adjustments yet?

Yup, sounds like really low fuel pressure or timing way late.

If it seems to run smooth enough, but has no RPM, try moving the distributor counter clockwise about an 1/8th turn (advanced) and see it it perks up. Otherwise, check your fuel pressure.

Sure enough it was the timing and the fuel pressure. Ive got it all back together and ive been driving it some this week. Still got some problems to deal with though. I tried to time it with a light but the closer I get it on the timing mark the worse it runs. I'm wondering if the balancer is bad, I reused the one that was on it and the rubber on the inside was kind of rotten and cracked. Any ideas on this? Heres some pics of it together.

I live in alabama, pretty soon going to lower it, get some carpet in it (ripped out the rubber that was inside it), 4 barrel intake and carb. Then eventually 4 inch cowl hood, rollpan, 17 inch cragar soft 8s in black, paint it either satin black or gloss and tint the windows. Then start building another engine!

Sounds like your balancer is probably focked. You can probably get close with a vacuum gauge, just time it for highest vacuum, then road test and listen for any ping or pre-detonation. 8)
