96-99 350 in a 03 Blazer~Need Help

Postby 03blazer » Fri Jan 04, 2008 1:25 pm

Hey everyone,

I'm new to the forum here. I was just wondering if someone could help me out with a few questions that I have about a V8 swap I wanna do. Ok, what I need to know is what all will I need from the donor truck. I'm gonna try to find a 350 out of a 96-99 full size to put in my Blazer. I wanna be able to put it in there and keep everything functioning like stock. I want to keep it stock looking under the hood too. Except for maybe a set of headers and an MSD box. I've seen it done before but I don't know what all they had to do to get everything in there and working properly. The truck looked like it still had the V6 in it. You couldn't tell it had a 350 in it until you started counting pipes on the headers or it fired up (dual Super 40s  ) Anyways, any help will be greatly appreciated.

Your best bet is to start reading all the stickies in each forum, and then we can help you with any specific questions. 8)

I've looked at several different ones on here. None have answered my question.

Have a look here...

Besides that, have a look over in the cooling section as to what you're going to have to do for a radiator/fan setup (if you keep A/C it gets tougher, but it's doable). Check out the exhaust section as well, for what header and mount setup you want to use.

I just did a swap on an '00 S10, and I also did a PCM pin swap to use the same computer that you've already got. The '411 computer is faster, so you get slightly better throttle response, and better gas mileage than the black box PCM that was in the '96-'99 FS trucks, and up to '00 in S10s. You can re-use the stock wiring harness that you have, as long as you get the V8 injector pod off another harness and run those wires (not too hard, just strip the cover off and run the pink wires from the fusebox and the other wires from the PCM). The only other wiring you'll have to do is possibly extend some of the wires for different things and run some wires for the 2nd after-cat O2 sensor (if you choose to run it).

Once you get the swap done, the PCM will have to be programmed for the V8. The only vehicles with the 411 PCM and Vortec 350s were the '01-'02 Express vans. You can either get a programming package and grab a base tune for a V8 and program it yourself, or get a mail-order place to do it for you. If you want a programming package, I'd personally recommend EFILive, it's fairly simple to use and turn on/off various options and modify a wide selection of other tables/parameters.

I only ran into a couple of issues... I had already swapped my radiator for a HD 4.3 radiator (the stock one was very thin, this one is over an inch thick core), and I had Flex-a-Lite 210 series electric fans. I had to cut off the threaded post (where the stock fan screws on) on the water pump for more clearance between the engine and fans. I also had to beat the hell out of the firewall where my shorty headers were too close.

If you've got further questions, and think I could help you out, shoot me a PM.
