difference between 4.3 700r4 and v8 700r4?

Postby Bigiron » Tue Jul 19, 2005 1:26 pm

I am starting to hear that you shouldn't use a 4.3 700r4 behind a v8 why is that? I used the stock v6 trans behind mine and it worked fine considering it has 200k on it when I bought it and I have beat on it pretty good. I have another 4.3 trans that I am thinking about getting rebuilt with a rebuild and shift kit from northern and was wondering should I look for another tranny. The truck is mainly street driiven and probaly will never have over 350 hp with a 700r4

Tear both of them apart and let me know also, I don't think there is a difference.

I can see where that would make a difference in high horsepower applications but in a mild 350 shouldn't matter to much

Kramer says his had just as many clutches as a V8 so I would listen to that  the input and output shafts are identical I can tell ya that much. The valve body seems to be the same but maybe there is a difference, I still doubt it.

I talked to a guy that is going to build mine and he builds race transmission and he said it wasn't a difference juat a matter of who builds it and if you put the right stuff in it

I had to ask a tech at TCI a question today, so in the email I added the question if there was a difference in the 4.3 and V8 700r so we will have a positive answer on this hopefully.

Mine had as many as a V8 tranny according to the guy that rebuilt mine there is no difference. He said " the case is only one size and you can only fit as many clutch paks as what came out of it" Now with that said the 200R4 does have less clutch paks.

He didn't get very technical but this is what he said...

my question

his answer
The later model 700R's as yours is are the same from a V6 to V8 and yes
you
need the lock up working as this aids in the lubrication to the rear
planetaries and will burn them up with out it.. We offer a kit # 376600
that
allows the lock up to work in any year vehicle. Thanks
