clarify some info for me about the 700r4 please

Postby mb9ballr » Thu Sep 21, 2017 6:01 am

OK, I'm getting conflicting info from resources ive checked. I have a basic carbed 350 in my truck, with a 700r4 from a late 80s full size pickup. It has the TV cable attached and seems to shift correctly, the speedo is working correctly. I'm getting ready to use it as a daily driver for no trips longer than 40mins before a stop. my question is about the "lockup" converter stuff. I haven't added anything not listed above. what damage could i do driving it as stated above? Some info says i have to wire it tolockup at highway speed and other info says that short trips like that aren't hurting it. any explanation for a "jack leg" like myself is appreciated!!!

The only "damage" done would be fluid getting too hot. I doubt that would be an issue for you. As far as wiring up the lockup function, if you can wire up a light switch, you can wire up the lockup function on a 700r4. I love these transmissions because they are fully hydraulic and simple to setup/run. If you need wiring help or suggestions, I'm happy to help.

I have my lock up on a switch. In 4th gear at around 45mph I flip the switch and lock it up. When I need to slow down I flip the switch off to unlock it.

I can cruise and watch the trans temp approach 180 but as soon as I flip the switch it will begin to cool down a little. So the lock up function reduces a lot of heat since the torque converter isn't spinning within itself.

You can wire it up like stock so you don't need a switch but using the lock up is recommended or you can buy a torque converter without the lock up function if you don't need it and if mpg isnt a concern.

You can actually keep most of the stock wiring. Once you drop the transmission pan, take the 12V + into the 4th gear pressure switch, it will be the one on the front side, closest to drivers side. The 12+ goes in, then out into the lock up solenoid which is on the backside of the tranny. You use a switch to interrupt the 12V+ prior to the transmission. That way when switch is off, no lockup. switch it on (where you would keep it 99% of the time anyway) it locks up just like a stock tranny. The lockup will only happen after 4th gear is acheived so it unlocks at over 1/2 throttle just like stock because the tranny will downshift via the TV cable position. If you need pics and I acquire some. Need to take more since the "photbucket bomb" happened

Yes, dear1700, I'd love some pics and more info. My intent is to only drive it to work and back, 20-30 mins on backroads, not race or no long highway miles. But I don't want to damage tranny or converter in any way. The tranny cooler lines are hooked up and inside the stock but brand new 4.3 radiator. Won't that help with the heat?
Anyway, my email is mbradshaw6969@gmail.com send me instructions and pics please!

Have a good tranny cooler and those drives should be no problem.

I have two 700r4's, one in my Chevelle and one in my Blazer. Both are supposed to be lockup, but for whatever reason they don't. I just have a decent transcooler and don't really lean on it in 4th. Chevelle has been running for a few years like that. My Blazer trans is new as of this year, so only 1-2k miles on it so far.

Just get 12V+ and ground to your TCC, it will help your fuel mileage.

I have mine wired up with a 3 way switch. On/OFF/Auto. Usually keep it in Auto. Running the original brake cutoff and using a vacuum switch for WOT cutoff. Fairly easy to do.

My dirt car has just the simple toggle on/off. It suits its purpose, but I wouldn't want a straight toggle on the street.

You can also hook up a pressure switch on the passenger side of trans by servo, and it will automatically lock up torque converter for when needed. that port only gets pressure when trans goes into 4th then it triggers lockup.

1, 2, 3, 4, then overdrive.

You can count the shifts and usually locks up around 45mph in stock form.

Meh, I look at it a bit different.

1, 2,3, OD (4th is overdrive). Then you can feel a small change (drop) in rpm. 100-300 rpm. If you maintain that speed and put slight pressure on the brake pedal while watching the tach, you can see it jump as the brake switch opens the circuit. On and off the brake pedal and you can see the change in the tach. (Assuming a brake switch is wired in)

With a 700r4 using a manual valve body and switched OD....it is 1,2,3,4 then OD as like a 5th gear as some call it. The other way always confused me. 4 gears then OD is when TC locks up.

Both are the same as we are describing but it's like saying a stop light has a yellow light or is it an orange light?

But 4th actually IS O.D., .67:1 as a matter of fact. TCC (lockup) is the Torque Converter Clutch, inside the converter, being applied to eliminate torque multiplication AND slippage, (also helps eliminate some heat by stopping the slippage).
My TCC is set up to lock up in 2nd if I want it to, which I sometime do when it's raining and slippery out,
It will lock up in all gears except 1st and reverse. 8)

This. People may call it several things, but the transmission only has 4 forward gears. The 4th of which is overdriven. Lockup only stops converter slippage.

Correct. What people consider the 4th gear varies all over the internet. Finding the correct info is difficult.

But for those of you on google who search "B&M Pro Ratchet 700r4" can rest assure it is 4 gears and lock up is the TC locking as stated. I had the hardest time finding it explained.
