03 nv3500, what do i need from the donor?

Postby dear1700 » Sun Jul 09, 2017 9:52 am

I found my unicorn in a local yard. Its a zr2 with a manual transmission, 8.5 rear and cast iron front diff. I'm swapping at least the transmission in. I have a305 now, I know I need the flywheel, pp and clutch from the 4.3, but what about crossmember? Also the 8.5 has a lateral type bar attached to the rear? Ditch it or weld up the appropriate bracket?

Thanks!

Ok, so if its all worth getting, let me ask some questions. The gear ratio of the ZR2 is 3.73. Is going from a 3.42 to 3.73 really going to be that noticeable behind a NV3500?

Also can i adapt the hydraulic clutch setup from the 2nd gen into the first gen or is it all fab work?
Can I ask some opinions? Would you switch out your front diff to the cast iron and rear to the 8.5? Or would it pretty much be only for bragging rights?

Much much stronger. One member went to the cast iron front diff for their AWD set up. The ZR2 suspension can be different as far as mounting but i'd have to double check. The ZR2 is a suspension upgrade for the 4x4 guys and gives better handling on and off road. For the clutch set up I believe a pedal from another 1st gen will be easier but you might be able to adapt them.

As far as gear ratio it won't matter too much for the NV3500 and will give better torque off road and mileage shouldn't suffer.

The fact you found a ZR2 in a junkyard with all these parts is impressive, they usually go quick.

use a clutch master cylinder from a 93 s10 and everything else from the 2nd gen. The 93 master has the correct bore and stroke, while also having the roll pin fitting.

94 Sonoma: SinistR SonoMa - Currently 2.2 T5, tubular uca's tall upper and lower ball joints, zq8 front and rear sway bar, drop spindles, 4cyl springs cut 3/4 loop, disc brake rear. Future mods LS1 front brakes, frame stiffening, camaro 3.4 block with 3400 pistons, ported 3500 top end and undecided on the cam. Want to keep the motor obdII so that will be fun. Also gonna run a camaro t5. After all the kinks are worked out I might screw it up again and add a hair dryer.
