Jeep Steering Shaft

Postby balidas » Wed May 27, 2009 1:34 pm

Ok, I have seen some questions about the Jeep Steering Shaft mod/swap. I also had some questions but found very little info. The one write up I did find, you had to be a paid subscriber to that forum to access that info. But I did find just enough info to do what I am about to share.

This is for my '87 4x4 Blaze I call "FrankenDime". But I would expect this to apply for all S10's.

I got my shaft at a u pull it for $7. The length was 23" The length of my stock shaft is 17".

Image

The first thing I did was pop off that plastic/composite sleeve with a screwdriver.

Image

What I did then was to heat up the shaft where both pieces overlap. There will be rubber in there holding the solid shaft in the tube. As you heat, you will see the rubber bubbling up from between. I used a plumbing torch. After the rubber burned off, I used a hammer on the big end to knock the solid shaft from the tube. You don't have to kill it, just hit enough to eventually knock the solid shaft loose, otherwise you could bash in that metal.

Image

Once the pieces are apart, I cleaned inside the tube, cleaned/sanded the shaft, then slide the shaft in until it was equal length with the stock shaft.

Image

The problem is that the shaft is bottomed out in the tube, so although it is now equal length, I don't have any "wiggle" room. And, considering I may have to install then uninstall the steering shaft in order to do other mods and fit the headers, I will need to cut the tube 1",

Image

Then cut the shaft 2-3". This way, when I have to, I can remove and install the steering shaft without messing with the steering column or steering box.

Image

After cutting, I will round off all edges to facillitate smooth sliding, lube it up, and continue to the next step.

Looks good Bali.

What is the mod for though? I ran shorties in my 86 and longtubes in my 95 and had no issues with either one. We thought we may have needed to modify the steering shaft in the jimmy with the LQ4, but the manifolds just barely touched the plastic on the shaft, and once it got warm it melted a ring around it, then no more smoking.

Thanx Jon.

I did the swap in order to rid myself of the rag joint. I did the mod, so should I have to remove the steering shaft, I can just unbolt each end, collapse it, then remove it, instead of messing with the steering column or steering box.

Yes, with that rag joint gone it tightens up your steering so you don't have that little bit of slop before the front wheels respond to your steering.

Is that the Grand Cherokee shaft for 1st gens? The Regular Cherokee shaft is for 2nd gens, right?

My next mod! Will compliment my quick steering box :D

My shaft was from a '95 Cherokee.

I couldn't specifically answer your ques about 2nd gens, as I have never worked on them. But I don't think the differences would be so great that this couldn't work.

From what Ive read on another forum the 2nd gens use the Grand Cherokee shaft, and the 1st gens use the Cherokee. The mod I read though involved cutting the steering column where it comes through the firewall. Not really sure I want to go cutting that ... but I really would love to get rid of that stupid rag joint.

I've read those kinds of posts also but didn't go that route. Do you have a 1st or 2nd gen? Like I said, I don't think that the differences between the two are so great that you couldn't use a jeep shaft. Probably the best would be to go to your j/y and check out the different jeeps, find the shaft you like and bring it home.

I have a 2nd gen so the one that is closest fit is from a grand cherokee. I figure Ill replace it if I get this high ratio gear box I'm bidding on. Too many projects going on the ol' girl at once ... lol

u could even instal it and then drill a hole all the way through it and put a 1/4 inch nut and bolt through just to be 100% sure it wont for some reason come loose from the top and slide down and come off. that would proabably never happen but you never know... then if you did that and you got in a wreck surely it would sheer that bolt and colaps, don't they make the shafts do that so the coloum doesnt jam into your face?

If you did that, it wouldn't collapse upon impact. Just make sure the through bolt at the firewall is tight, or drill and cotter pin or safety wire it, 8)

FYI, bolts are 3/8-16 (NC). I used 1.25" underhead length, extra from an ARP fuel pump bolt kit.
