This is for my '87 4x4 Blaze I call "FrankenDime". But I would expect this to apply for all S10's.
I got my shaft at a u pull it for $7. The length was 23" The length of my stock shaft is 17".

The first thing I did was pop off that plastic/composite sleeve with a screwdriver.

What I did then was to heat up the shaft where both pieces overlap. There will be rubber in there holding the solid shaft in the tube. As you heat, you will see the rubber bubbling up from between. I used a plumbing torch. After the rubber burned off, I used a hammer on the big end to knock the solid shaft from the tube. You don't have to kill it, just hit enough to eventually knock the solid shaft loose, otherwise you could bash in that metal.

Once the pieces are apart, I cleaned inside the tube, cleaned/sanded the shaft, then slide the shaft in until it was equal length with the stock shaft.

The problem is that the shaft is bottomed out in the tube, so although it is now equal length, I don't have any "wiggle" room. And, considering I may have to install then uninstall the steering shaft in order to do other mods and fit the headers, I will need to cut the tube 1",

Then cut the shaft 2-3". This way, when I have to, I can remove and install the steering shaft without messing with the steering column or steering box.

After cutting, I will round off all edges to facillitate smooth sliding, lube it up, and continue to the next step.
