Camaro LFX Swap?

Postby Tmtall » Tue Sep 26, 2017 6:09 pm

New to the boards here. Question: what do you all think of swapping in a Camaro LFX "high feature" 3.6L v-6 into a gen 1 truck?

Pro's - cheap $$$, lightwight aluminum, 60 degree v-6 should fit nicely, good power at 300HP...
Con's - does it really fit? stand alone harness & ECM may be tricky. Is it worth solving all the unknowns to do it?

Welcome! This would be an interesting swap to see done. For the amount of work it would still be cheaper to do an LS swap.

I'd have to physically look at one but that would leave plenty of room for a turbo if that v6 could handle it.

Wiring is no problem, it mainly comes down to exhaust and transmission mounting.

If that's the same V6 the Caddy CTXs use, (which I suspect it IS), they have LOTS of cam chain and tensioner problems....got one in the shop right now that was done right at 2 years ago, and it's got the same problem again. I advised them STRONGLY to trade the thing in after fixing it, but they chose to keep it and keep driving it....

Yeah, it's the same engine in the Cadillac. So, engine reliability not so good? BTW, some of the Caddy's came with twin turbos which gave it 440HP....

Maybe I'm looking at the cost of an LS wrong. LKQ Online lists late model Camaro LS motors and trans at $7-$8k, whereas they list the 3.6 V6 at about $1500. Am I looking in the wrong place for comparing motor prices?

You can buy complete trucks for $1000~$1500 sometimes...scrap them when you're done. 8)

Buying a donor truck will be easier. Or if you're like me you can go buy a good block or good running motor and have it stripped and properly checked and build it right the first time.
