Unstoppable oil leak!

Postby Rumsawatti » Sat Aug 12, 2017 5:58 am

Hello all! Firstly, Id like to apologize if this is in the wrong section. I'm having some issues with my engine and leaking oil, pretty big leaks. I recently rebuilt my Gen 1 350, nothing crazy or fancy; aluminum blue print heads, mild cam, edelbrock airgap intake, hedman headers, holley carb, and high volume oil pump. However, I cannot for the life of me get the damn thing to stop leaking from the distributor base and the valve covers. I never had these leaks before with the stock heads and the holley contender intake I was using before. I never even used a gasket with the holley contender and no leaks lol. But since installing these heads and this edelbrock, the leaks wont stop. The distributor base is leaking badly, Ive tried no gasket, gasket, rtv, rtv and a gasket, and even two gaskets to try and stop the leak and nothing works! I use Permatex Right stuff and let it sit overnight without touching it to make sure it is fully cured and it still leaks. Is it possible too much crankcase pressure could cause this? Or do I need a better or aftermarket distributor hold down?
Also, ive always used cork gaskets for the valve covers, are rubber ones better? What do you all recommend I try to resolve these issues? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you all!

Sounds like you're developing too much crankcase pressure. Do you have a PCV system in place? Or at least some valve cover breathers? :?: 8)

Rick hit the nail on the head. If you're running breather grommets make sure they're not too long and bottoming out on the oil deflector and sealing everything

Thanks for the advice! I thought maybe something like that..I don't have a pcv system in place. One valve cover has an "oil cap" like below and the other end has a breather like below. But ive always thought it was a little weird because the breather grommet is solid like the picture below so I really don't see how its breathing. What is the best bet? Install a pcv, run two breather with open grommets, or just replace my current breather with an open air filter style breather with open grommet?

Cut the grommets and make sure they don't seal. One breather and the other a PCV. ALL motors need a PCV, one thing I need to do is PCV.

Also toss those chrome breathers and at the very least get the filter type.

Check the back of the intake and make sure you didnt blow out the gasket also.

I usually take a hole punch and punch a 5/16" ~ 3/8" hole in the bottom of the grommet, helps keep oil from getting sucked up or blown out while still allowing plenty of air flow. 8)

I'm assuming as was stated above, too much pressure in the crankcase or not enough ventilation for the crankcase. Installing a pcv and a filter breather seemed to be all it took/needed! :D
